It’s a wrap for truffles this Christmas

Assorted home made truffles

Assorted home-made truffles

I wanted to make a special gift for our dinner guests this Christmas and some quick cheat truffles inspired by Cooking with Siba were just the right thing to make.

Siba’s recipe is a bit more Afrocentric if you like, she uses Marie biscuits. I used rich tea biscuits and added Madeira wine to mine, must be the Portuguese inspiration. I must say that Siba’s recipe claims it only takes 5 minutes, but ahem, I helped my sister make 60 so it took much longer. By the way, my sister is the sweet one in the family. Where there is cake or sweets to be made, she will virtually take over if she is near. Here goes for those special truffles.

Melted White chocolate

1 packet South African Marie Biscuits (English Rich Tea) (300g) (makes 30)
1/2 cup dessicated coconut
3 tbsp Cadbury’s hot chocolate or cocoa (optional)
1 can sweetened condensed milk (397g)
1/2 a glass (30ml) Madeira wine (I saved some for my little one before adding)
150g melted white chocolate
150g melted dark chocolate

1. My dear sister crushed some of the biscuits with the back of a wooden spoon. This took forever. We took my beloved blitzer and pulverised the biscuits in a manner of seconds. I highly recommend this method. Mix with the coconut and cocoa.

2. Add condensed milk. Be careful when adding the wine as you do not want to end up with sticky mush. If it gets too sticky, just add more biscuit. Roll up into truffle sized balls. If the balls get too sticky to roll smoothly, just wash and dry your hands to get the stickiness off then continue.

3. Dip the balls in the white or brown chocolate. We found this coats better if the chocolate has cooled a bit and is not as runny. Place on tray and cool in the fridge. The white truffles looked great coated in the coconut. We played around with a few designs.
