Cabbage is one of my all-time favourite vegetables and this buttery sautéed cabbage with garlic and onions is simply the best. So simple it only takes 5 minutes.
How Much We Love Cabbage
Cabbage is a delightful yet understated vegetable. It is super affordable and suits any diet you fancy be it keto, low fat or banting. I love it in as many ways as it comes. Sauteed, baked, quiched, gratinated, fried, raw slaw, salad, in spring rolls and the list goes on. I could eat it all day. I love it as a side to meat and sadza dishes, dumplings, stew and even chapati. It goes particularly well with Chinese style rice and chicken dishes and so many more.
The Best Way to Cook Buttery Sautéed Cabbage
Slice the cabbage as thinly as you can. You don’t have to. It will be delicious either way, however, thinly slicing it will make it quite delicate and quick cooking. Cabbage goes really well with the allium family of vegetables be it cabbage and leak, cabbage and onion, or a buttery garlicky cabbage dish. I see no reason to change this at all. My favourite way to make buttery sautéed cabbage is to pair it with plenty of onions and garlic. You can use a minimal amount of butter if you are fat conscious, or you could go as liberally as you like. It is such a simple dish that you can spruce up at a festive dinner table with a few slivers of flat beans (romano beans) for a bright green and fresh touch. Alternatively, you could sprinkle with spring onions or parsley.

Finely slice the cabbage and onions. Crush. the garlic and finally slice the beans lengthways into long and thin strips. 2. Melt the butter in a hot pan, add the onions and sautée until they are translucent. Add the garlic and fry for up to one minute. 3. Add the cabbage and green beans and continue to stirfry on high heat for 5 to 10 minutes. If the pan is too hot or too dry, add a little water to activate some steaming. 4. Season with salt and pepper, garnish with herbs of your choice then serve. February 28, 2024 at 7:05 pmI am making stuffed cabbage, but have extra leaves enough to make a small plate of your recipe. I will try it with garlic butter, will see how it turns out.

March 18, 2025 at 3:47 pmMy first time in awhile cooking cabbage. Loved it! added some ground turmeric, ginger and jalapeño pepper (also ground).
Used thin green beans, unsliced and a bit of chopped carrots. It was nice served with a simple couscous pilaf.

April 21, 2025 at 6:12 pmThis came out perfect! My client can’t do salt, so I added a little lemon juice. After a few days, I mixed it with some eggs for a breakfast hash and it is his new favorite. Thank you!
